Devs beat Abingdon United

Didcot Town Development produced a stunning performance to move into the last eight of the Wiseman Cup at Abingdon United on Tuesday evening.

Second half goals from Freddie Copping and Alfie Rouse helped Second Division Didcot to a 2-0 win at First Division promotion chasers Abingdon.

Didcot were dealt a blow before the game. Goalkeeper Fin Coles was injured in the warm-up, meaning a late call up for Karl Dawson and with players not arriving for the game, they could name just three substitutes.

Abingdon United Football Club made eight changes to their starting line-up from the weekend.

The hosts came closest to opening the scoring in the first half. Jack Gaul, seeing his effort, hit the post.

The game came to life in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.

Joe Parry was denied an opener for Didcot by a great save from former Didcot Town Youth goalkeeper Jack Brind.

It was then the turn of Didcot goalkeeper Karl Dawson to produce a stunning save, keeping out an effort from Leo Cole.

The breakthrough was made ten minutes into the half. Alfie Rouse did well out wide and his cross found Freddie Copping and the striker bundled the ball home.

Karl Dawson produced another good save to maintain Didcot's lead as Abingdon piled on the pressure.

Didcot made the game safe in the closing moments. With Abingdon searching for an equaliser, Didcot broke and Alfie Rouse was there to double the lead to the delight of everyone from Didcot.

It is a great win for the development team. They can now look forward to a quarter-final tie against Premier Division side Westfields.
